Artist Spotlight: Matilda Heindow

Matilda Heindow is an artist and mental health advocate based in Stockholm. She is a published author, TED Talk presenter, and the creator of whimsical, poignant, and sometimes humorous mental health related comics which can be found on her Instagram page @crazyheadcomics.

Matilda’s artwork captures human experiences that are hard to describe or share with others. She boldly illustrates aspects of her lived experience with mental health challenges. Her artwork and comics can be evocative, as she does not shy away from the pain, anguish, and confusion that many people feel in their daily lives. Her artistic style is also warm and inviting, with clean lines and vibrant colors. Some of her artwork expounds on experiences of people with different types of mental health challenges, like anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

She also uses her platform to encourage those struggling with mental health challenges to utilize a multitude of healthy coping strategies. She has posted comics offering a range of self-care strategies to try, comics specific to the challenges posed by different times of the year, and comics designed to help individuals understand themselves better and hold onto self-compassion.
